Time for New Maths Australia - Book 2, is the third in the series of seven books that treats Mathematics in the context of everyday language.
Lessons have been developed from the Year Two content Descriptions and sections of the Mathematics F-10 Australian Curriculum. The strands include Number and Place Value, Patterns and Algebra, using units of Measurement and Geometry along with Statistics and Probability. The programmed topics in this book will help the parent or teacher present and the student develop in proficiencies of understanding, fluency, problem solving, and reasoning which are integral parts of the Mathematic content of the program.
Children will learn the language of mathematics so it becomes more meaningful when attempting lessons within each unit. Some lessons may need a parent or teacher to read or assist with instructions. At all times the intent of the activity should be explained. Parents or Teachers can use activities in this book as motivation or more importantly as a written record of understanding and performance after hands-on activities and classroom discussion. Some children may need help in reading activities. This will also help develop understanding concepts. Content descriptions and curriculum references can be found at the bottom of each page throughout the book.
This along with the Lesson Overview Register will help parents or teachers cross reference the lesson content with curriculum objectives. While there is a suggested sequence of lessons, teachers can use the program as necessary to meet individual needs of the pupils, classroom priorities and school philosophy. Simple registration by the teacher to monitor lessons is flexible. However, the Overview addresses the year's objectives prescribed by the curriculum. Each book in the series is fully self-contained with a suggested Lesson Register.
Topics and lessons parallel the Australian Mathematics Curriculum Foundation to Year 6 for Year 2. Four Review activities in NAPLAN format can be found from page 136. There is a full set of answers and an Evaluation Profile. The evaluation profile provides an ideal measurement of a childs achievement in mathematics. As the child develops skill in mathematics throughout the year, the parent or teacher can use the Evaluation Profile on page 156 to monitor and record progress. It can also be used as a Pupil Profile checklist as proficiencies in each area of mathematics are achieved by the child.
Time for New Maths is also supported by a Time for New Mentals book for each grade. The Units in Time for New Mentals can be used to extend activities, used at home to reinforce lessons or as a stand-alone book that further exposes the child to proficiencies of the curriculum. Each Time for New Mentals book has a full set of answers for teachers and or parents to help the child develop an understanding and confidence in mathematics.
